I'm pretty new to ATVs, but I've got an 03 600. The other day we were out riding in some mud and a little bit of water. I have had virtually no trouble with this machine that I haven't caused myself. It ran great all day and then all of the sudden I couldn't get over 30mph. If I hit the throttle hard it would sputter and choke with a little backfiring. If I slowly eased into the throttle I could maybe get to 30. Low range and reverse seem to work better than High. I checked my filter, its OK, and the reverse override doesn't seem to be causing any problems. If I move the choke **** while driving it seems to run a little better. Any suggestions?

Typete01.....I agree with Lvthoutdrs....Sounds like you may have fouled out a plug!
Take the plugs out and replace them 1st, its the easiest thing you can start with. Sounds like one cylinder is firing and one not.
Its a cheap $4 test to see if its the problem.
Hope it gets ya movin again!

HammerInHank -
So glad that you found the problem and it worked out for you. Any chance that the rear carb boot (the one between the airbox and the carb) has a tear?
Also, Lovemud, has a very good suggestion when he says -
"it souds like somthing got into the vent tube. After you clean it try putting a small plastic fuel filter on the end and tuck it back under the tank. This will prevent any reoccurence. "
I know of quite a few people who have gotten mud in their carbs through that vent hose.

Hey Thanks guys,
I finally got around to taking my carb off. There was a little bit of debris in there, I cleaned it out and put it back together. My machine is still a little sluggish off of the line but it runs 100% better than it did. I don't know if maybe there is still a little debris in there or not, once in a while it backfires. I haven't changed the plugs yet but that will be the next thing. At least I am gaining ground and experience. Thanks a bunch

typete01,
You are running lean. All 02-700 and 03-600/700 came from the factory running lean (for the western PA area). I'll only get worse, especially in the winter. You will need to replace you main jet and the slide spring. Your Polaris dealer should have the parts you need.
Polaris actually covered all of the repairs on mine even after the warranty had expired. They know that they had a problem. I would talk with your dealer and see what they say.
Good luck!
