Default sportsman light modifications

Thanks. I don't know what the difference between a relay and a diode is. The kit that I purchased just has a yellow wire on one end and a green on the other. In between there is a black cylinder-type connection. The connector in between the wires is about an inch long. The installation instructions say that all I have to do is connect the yellow end to the yellow wire in the pod and the green end to the green wire in the pod. From the looks of your diagram I am assuming that I have the less desirable method for performing the mod. Do you agree?

Thanks again.

I started out doing the diode version (which is what I think you have). I have since converted these ATVs and my new installs to the relay version. IMO yes you have the less desirable. You will hear arguements either way.

I haven't had any problems yet with the switch kit that I installed. I have been running my machine with it on for over a year now. I have a couple of friends that have this installed on their polaris sportsmans as well without any problems.

I have done the diode mod & it didn't pan out. My switch went out because of too much amp draw.
The switch from Polaris was $ 100.00.

Since then I bought a wirring connector that plugs into the light bulb for the high beam spot light & I wired it into a toggle switch.

Problem is now solved @ a cost of $ 10.00. No more bad diodes or Polaris headlight switches.

I guess I'll be the one to take odds with the relay method after thousands of miles and hundreds of hours on the diode mod since 1997 without ever damaging a switch. Either way will work, it's just the diode is the simpler of the two and has proven its reliability to me IF the diode is of adequate capacity to handle the load. Not all diodes are created equal.
