I purchased the EPI kit from Dennis Kirk(158.99). I"m very impressed with it.The clutch hits harder and really wakes it up to about 45mph.Backshifting is also excellent.I also purchased a dayco max belt(31.99), but it is too soon to tell if its any better than the stock one. Purchased a Boyseen rad valve at the same time, it helped out the bottom and mid quite a bit along giving me back the top end the clutch kit took and then some! I also noticed better gas milage with it. When my Dynoport pipe gets here it should really scream! Should be making over 50hp then!

45mph? That must be a misprint. I know that Xplorers 400 4x4 will do 62 off the show room floor.

PolarisMan,Yes it goes faster than 45mph! I meant it gets to 45 Mph like a bat out of hell! Top speed 72.6 mph! Thats on a tar road after about a mile, according to my Magellan 315 gps. The tempeture was in the low 70's.It gets to about 65 pretty fast.My mods are as follows, K&N , 200 main jet, Boyseen Rad valve and EPI clutch kit. Oh, also Warn winch.

Ok thats is more like it. I thought for a second that you were crazy. The would have to be the ultimate muddin/trail machine. It has OK engine breaking with the clutch, right? I am thinkin about a new atv and that is one of them. I just wish they were shaft drive!!!!!!!!

PolarisMan,yes it has decent engine braking by throttle manipulation but nothing like the ebs system. It works pretty good to control speed down steep hills but not very good for decelleration. 99 and newer Xplorers have the concentric sys. shaft to the front chain to rear.I've only had to adjusted the chain three times in 850 miles so its not that big of deal. You just have to lube it often especially after muddin. The Xplorer is a far superior machine to the Sportsman in my opinion, I put 4800 miles on my 98 Sportsman before buying a pair of Xplorer's. It is much quicker in twisty trails, more fun to throw around and a better mudder to boot! The Sportsman does have a better ride on uneven terrian.
