Default 4x4 Scrammy

I was out mudding last weekend. I usually leave my 4X switch on if I know the spot we are playing in is soupy. So I go into a mudhole, and get stuck. My rear tires are spinning, but the front wheels are not pulling like I would expect. I back-up, and try to go acrossed again. Then the front wheels start working and I get right through it. I just filled my hubs with sythentic ATF fluid. The one hub was dry. Should I take my hubs apart and clean them or something? I can't have my brother pulling me out with his Warrior all the time. That's humiliating...

Should I backup when I disengage my 4x4?
