Sportsman 400 vs Scrambler 500
#3
There is a big difference in speed between the 2. I own 2 sportsman 400s and my neighbor has a scrambler 500. The sportsman 400 can't even contend with the scrammy 500 when it comes to speed. As far as a difference with 4 wheel drive, I dont think there is one.

These are two different animals. Sportsman is way more commfy to ride for long rides. The sportsman has low range in 4X4 so it is better on the belt. The scrambler is a rocket compared to the sportsman, so you really need to decide what you need. Oh, BTW, I have not seen any 4x4 that can take a scrambler up till the top end. It kills my buddys rincon and grizz.

Power difference in terms of acceleration and giggle-factor is night and day. Throttle response on the Scrambler is much snappier than the Sportsman. It's really an apples to oranges comparison...

I would have to agree with the others...I have a sportsman 400 and it's a great bike, but it's no sport bike. However, it climbs like a goat and has a top speed of about 55 (at my elevation).

Hey anyone with a sp400- i have a 2004, and i think the rear suspension is too stiff. The preload adjustment is all the way loose, but even if i jump on the rack, the back only goes down about an inch. Also, with the back always all the way up, the cv boots are always at a bad angle, which may be why i just changed my third cv boot tonight (first one i've done myself, wasnt til i was done that i realized the dealer has given me a font boot, gotta work on that...) with the boot at an angle, and stick that touches it must get "sucked in" between the turning folds of it, and tear it. The three times mine have torn, the whole side has been torn open...
Anyway, thats off topic. My main question is the rear suspension- any insight there? Thanks

no offence but you must be a real light weight!! I have never heard of sportsmans being to hard, most are too soft for there likings. I would get a set of A ARM guards though to protect those boots.

Yep, were getting the a arm guards next timme we're there. On my 250's, i can jump on them and easily bottom them out. But not the 400. I dont know how anyone would ever bottom out that suspension while driving...
