Spoirtsman HO Carb Question?

I was wondering if it is necessary to upgrade to a 40MM carb if I plan to install a scrambler cam in my 2000SP500. I know I don't have to, but to get the performance of the HO, is it neccessary?
This is what has me wondering...
If I remove my airbox lid, the bike leans out so much, it won't rev much above idle. This tells me that the stock carb will flow much more air than what is necessary for the bike. Then why can I add the scrambler cam and jet accordingly and still get the same performance.
Also, what after market cam is equivalent or better than the scrambler cam. I don't want to go so extreme that I have to change out my valve springs.
AND, will this void my warranty?
Any help will be appreciated.

be carefull greg about doing this, jack schultz did it with no problems. but i have heard that the 500H.O has a stronger crank than the regular sp500. this is to handle the extra h.p and RPM. im sure it will void your warentee. but isnt your warrentee already void with all thoes mods u did??

Actually, most of my riding is just rail riding and hill climbing in Arkansas. The snorkel was only installed for one ride and I didn't announce it at the dealership. I have had my tires wheels and spacers sitting in the garages for 6 weeks now hoping to sell them. I think I sold my spacers to getagrip.
Anyway, I was told that the crank for the scrambler500 and the SP500 were the same part with a different part number. I was told that by the Polaris mechanic at the dealership.
Maybe Chopperbill will know more???

This weekend there will be a group of us camped out at site 66 and 67 at Kirby Landing on Lake Greeson. Wi will ride wolf pen Sat morning and Greeson the rest of the time. Let me know if you want to ride with us and we will plan to meet. That goes for anyone in that area.

Hey Greg better watch what you type on here, Polaris does read this forum...what I was wondering if you have the extended warranty on your bike, what happens if something was to go wrong with your motor would it be replaced with an HO say about a year from now when all the original Sportsman motors are gone...know what I mean Vern...hehehe

I assume you bike will be returned to it original condition. There are only minor differences in the motor.
As far as my mods, the dealership told me they could not warranty the bike with the big tires on there, thats part of why I took them off one week after I bought the bike. The snorkel was also removed and no damage was done to the plastic.
Anyway, I did as my dealer asked. I wouldn't expect the warranty to cover something that is my fault but at the same time if I blow a head gasket riding in the mountains, I hope they would not refuse the service due to a 1.5" lift on the front end. However, if the lift was on the front end and I broke a CV, that would be out of my pocket.
I did buy a 54 month warranty that takes effect after the Polaris warranty. I am not sure how picky that warranty service will be? Anyway the SP500 is an awesome bike even stock, and the reliabilty issue is very important to me. Thats why I agreed to remove the mods.
