adjusting your oil ajustment

I have a 98 polaris 400 L sport (oil injected) and it is running a little to lean. when i was riding my buddies four wheeler and i was fowwloing my girlfriend on mine all that i could smell was the gas and very little oil. i am pretty sure that i need to adjust the oil adjustment but am not sure how to. And when i do adjust it how do i know when the mixture is good. i appreciate all the help i recieve thanks

I'll try to explain this:
1) Adjust throttle linkage just below the thumb throttle to 1/8 to 1/16" slack before the carb slide begins to move.
2) Remove oil pump cover (front left of engine if you're sitting on the bike).
3) Have a buddy hold the throttle to the point to where there is no slack (the point to where the slide is going to come up if any more throttle is given).
4) Adjust the linkage above the oil pump to where the "D" aligns with the mark on the housing.
5) Put everything back in place and ride.
P.S. If you're running Polaris Gold, there should be very little odor, so it could be normal. You can also note that you should be having to replace about 1 quart of oil for every 8 gallons of gasoline burned in your machine. Hope this helps.
