Front brake changing help on 99 400 Scrambler
Hello all. Great forum you've got here. I just purchased a used 99 400 Scrambler 4x4. All brake pads completely worn to the steel. Easily changed the rears, but the fronts are another story. Anyone with a manual or experience in this area? Seems like those two big "pins" that go through the holes in the pads would have to come off or back up to allow the pads to go in. I've got the calipers free from the mounting plate, but can't seem to figure out how to get it all together. Thanks a lot.

Welcome to the forums!
The front pads are a piece of cake. Once you have the caliper removed, loosen the pad adjuster screw 2-3 turns. The use a c-clamp to push the piston into the caliper bore. Then push the mounting bracket inward and slip the outer brake pad past the edge and remove the pad. When you go to re-assemble it, put some grease on the braket pins and install the rubber dust boot. Compress the mounting bracket and make sure th dust boots are fully seated. Then you can re-install the new pads. Reinstall the caliper and torque to 18ft lbs. Slowly pump the brake lever until pressure is built up. Turn the adjuster screw in until the staionary pad contacts the disc, then back it out 1/2 turn. That's all there is to it!

Thanks guys. I actually figured it out myself by compressing one of the large pins in enough to allow the pads to slip in. Got all new brakes now. I had to adjust the rear brakes a lot, as even with the new pads they hardly did anything. Thanks again.
