If the gas was coming out the overflow, youd smell it, or see it.
Hows the air filter...clean and reoiled? Overoiled? if the air filter is plugged up, that will cause a big use in gas.
Are your brakes dragging? Flat tires? Rusty chain?
If you dont find obvious things like this, then id agree with low compression.

2-strokes are known to burn lots of fuel. However in your example, if the explorer sucked that much fuel it would not run. It would flood itself.

Things to do - clean/replace airfilter, install new plug, and give it a test run. Then pull your plug and give it a looksy. If it is black or white you need to rejet. If you need help, just post back.

Also, the only thing that would effect the gas while idling would be the air filter, which it fairly new, and still good.

Don't be telling lies like this! My 250 Trail Boss would run forever on a tank, and my Xplorer 400 gets equal or better mileage than an AC 500 and Vinson 500 I ride with. Interestingly, 2-strokes usually get better mileage at faster speeds than just putting around.

If his 300 is stock, it should get close to 100 miles to a tank in normal trail riding. (that's about 160 km, or 100 more than he's getting now)

Wow, I wish mine would get that kinda mileage. What size tank do you have on your 400?

Steve,

If you think you know it all, then why do you come here and ask for advice? And by the way, it's not a lie, it's a fact!

I didn't say I knew it all, I think you got my post mixed up with someone else's, cause I just said, "wow, I wish mine got that good of fuel."

So get off my back.

He was confused about who wrote the post. Just like he's confused about 2-stroke fuel mileage. I'm on my 3rd Polaris 2-stroke quad, and they certainly do not burn lots of fuel.
