Default 2005 winch

I just got a 2005 SP 500 mossy oak camo. I want to put a winch on it but I read that a regular winch will not work. Something to do with the way it mounts. The Warn sells a prewired winch to fit the new quads. Can someone shed some light on this for me and let me know what I will need to put a winch on my 2 day old 500. I was looking at a Ramsey or Warn winch. Thanks

I put one of the pre-wired Warn 3.0 3000 lb winches on my '05 700 EFI. They say you can install in minutes....sure, like about 180 of them.

The prewired part is that you have a mount for the contactor mounted in the right wheel well. If you look, you will see a bronze colored bracket. You mount the contacter there and there is wiring that runs back to the battery. The only other pre-wired part is a connection under the housing that is below and in front of the headlight pod. Thats it.

You can mount other winches in there, you just need the right mount. Anything up to the 3.0 Warn will fit, won't fit the 4.0 Warn.

Also, the instructions suck, just like all of Polaris instructions. If you want help or need advice, I can give you my number to call me.

Here is a pic of the 3.0 installed on my '05 700 EFI:

Winch

Notice that you have to cut out the face plate that comes on the ATV. Thats a chore in itself. i left a larger gap at the top and then put in a piece of pip insulation foam. I did this because it is easier to get your fingers in there to remove the plate in case you want to free-spool your winch.

Like I said, If you have any questions, give me a call. They aren't cheap with the mounts and hardware, the 2.5 is $449 and the 3.0 is $579....

Don't let the dealer tell you that the 2.5 is the same as the 3.0, it isn't. If you look at the 3.0, it pulls straight from the center, the 2.5s center is slightly off-center.

Thanks for the info. I know the Warn winch is not cheap but I have seen the regular 2.5 warn winch cheaper then the prewired one but i guess that won't work with the 2005 models. From what I have seen Warn is the only one making a prewired winch for the 2005 models. Thanks

ELKBOW I like the brush guard I wonder if that would work with my Glacier Plow system. Nice looking Quad.

I don't understand what you mean Bart by saying a regular winch will not work. What is a regular winch to you? And another important consideration is the Warm 3,000 comes with a remote switch so you can stand away from the ATV while winching. I think 3,000 pounds of pull is overkill but the remote switch alone is worth the extra expense in my opinion.

Bart, you can still use a regular winch, you just need to get the mount for the front of the 2005, which I haven't seen yet, its different I think from the 2004. I have a brand new mount sitting here for the 04, I'll have to check it.

Also, the prewire is just a wire running from the contactor to the battery, the winch still conects like a normal one.

As far as the Glacier plow working with the brushguard.....yup, it will not interfere with the plow operation.

It is a great addition, safer to go through brush, etc. and not scratch the hell out of the front end or take out a headlight....

Snowwolfe What I meant by a regular winch was one that isn't pre wired. The prewired ones look like they mount differently (without a special mounting plate).

The 'prewired' winch comes with the mounting plate. Thats the only difference. The '05 sportsman already has the power cable running to the battery from the contacter installed. A standard winch comes with this cable and you have to install it. I would really have to say that it takes maybe 10 minutes less to install this winch vs the standard install. It is also not easily removable, once installed you leave it installed. Polaris makes it seem like you can pull it in and out....you can, just like you can the regular one, takes awhile too...

Be cautious about mounting a non-prewire warn winch to your bike!! I work at Warn in the atv winch department--There is a BIG difference in the contactor connection. You MUST have the "new" winch if your bike is prewired. The difference is not very significant except at the point where the contactor connects with the switch. I just make the winches, not so much work out how to put them on the bikes, but I believe that if you have a pre-wired bike you have to buy the "spirit" winch...Warn PN 68860 if I recall correctly. Anyway, that winch is MUCh easier to mount since the hook and roller and mounting plates are all already installed. All you have to do is bolt it on to your ATV and connect the cables. Here's a link for a 2.5 Spirit Polaris winch...
http://www.purepolaris.com/Detail.aspx?Department=ATV(PolarisPGACatalog)&Cate gory=ATVByModels(PolarisPGACatalog)&Listing=05Sptm n400500(PolarisPGACatalog)&ItemID=2875309(PolarisP GACatalog)

I hope it works. Also, if you're interested in the handheld remote, those can be purchased separately...Hmm. Well actually I'm not sure about for the 2.5 spirit. Hm...You'll have to check into that part. I'd be sure except for that dang weird connector. Normally the remote connects to the contactor through two separate wires, the green one and the black one. The special contactor connection rolls the two wires into one. We make the special remote for the 3.0's though, so it's pretty likely that we sell it separately and those remotes will work the same on a 3.0 as a 2.5.

Hope this info helps!!!!
