Ok i bout my 99 500 scrambler on may 15 99. and so far i have changed the oil 22 times is that 2 many or is that perfect i think the engine oil is the most important thing to a long lasting engine. And with my mods its even more important.

Sure, that is a lot of changes. But it is WAY better to do lots of changes then to not do enough.

Too many changes increases the chances of you getting little bits of dirt and rocks in the engine, but keep up the good work.

Don't forget to keep up on your other fluids too.

I've always heard, with a four stroke, rule of thumb is to change the oil every seven tanks of gas.

I would change it after the 1st 100-200 miles and then every 500 miles after that. I slipped on mine and did the first change at 250, but I have been consistent with 500 miles since then.

One other thing to consider. On a vehicle, they say to change the oil every 3000 miles or 3 months, which ever come first.
Now, on a quad you would not wait the 3000 miles. But you still should do about every 500 miles or 3 months. The reason behind the 3 months advice, is that regular (not synthetic) oil's viscosity will break down, reducing the protection a great amount. You can put oil in a machine and not even run it, and the oil will break down.
That is why they say to change your lawnmowers oil right before storing it for the winter, then to change it right away when the season begins again.

Nothing wrong with taking care of your quad. That seems like alot of times to change the oil, but it sure isn't going to hurt anything. I changed mine at 100 miles and twice a year after that. Usually in the spring and in the fall which averages out to about every 200-300 miles.
