Xpedition425 axle problem
#1
Im afraid this is gonna HURT my wallet! I noticed when backing my quad out of the garage that the right rear didnt appear to be spinning. I confirmed this by looking at the left wheel and sure nuff it would spin on the smooth concrete floor. I jacked it up and took off the wheel and the hub is spinning on the axle. About a tablespoon of metal dust came out. I wasnt able to remove the hub, maybe a puller would get it, but I would think that the axle is trashed too. Has anyone had a prob like this and how hard(and expensive) is it going to be to fix???

The hub should not be to expensive. The axle only costs around $120 bucks down here. Never stripped a hub but have broken two axles and bent one. Finally got smart and replaced it with a DuraBlue axle. Going to replace the hubs with the DuraBlue hubs when they send me a new set. The first one they sent the bolt holes were drilled off center and would not work.

Cool, now u got 3wd like I did that day after I snapped that CV joint... Only yours is 3wd on the rear...
The hubs are tryically alot softer than the axle, U might have gotten lucky and it just stripped the hub. Axles are cheap for Polaris when compared to "Others"
Have you noticed any loosness in the rear end when you ride? The hubs work loose occasionally, and more often when muddin' and running oversized tires. I remove the Polari' hubs every so often and clean, inspect, and put plenty of anti seize on them....
I had thought about putting some sort of O-rings on both sides of the hub to try and keep water/mud out of there... but decided that I'd just get too lazy and NEVER check them and end up trashing some parts...
Old Smoky trashed a hub too, so its not a Polaris thing, just a Muddin' thing.. hahahaha...

425 exp, just curious how do you break 2 axles and bend another? must be some heavy duty riding? i can see wiping out a hub and maybe takin out the axle splines with it because of heavy muddin, but breakin axles,do you jump with it?

Hubs are under $25 . A riding buddy of mine just stripped his second one this weekend. Each time he has finished the day of ridding and never destroyed the splines. He has 27"x12" all the way around and doesn't believe in letting off the gas!

The rear axles do not like wheel spacers and heavy tires. The one that I bent was from hitting a tree, I think. Around here it is not unheard of to break the axle. It will always break the splined part of the shaft off. Only the right side seems to break. I rarely jump the bike, it weighs to much.

Thanks for the input guys, sounds like I need to get the old hub off to see exactly how much damage is done.
425Xpedition,
Where would I find the Durablue axle and hubs you mentioned?

I wonder if my axle problem could be the same as yours, where it was missing a spacer between the bearings. If it was, then polaris would pick up the tab. It seems that a group of us have about 1 year old xpeditions that are having some problems.
Even though, some of the problems are our own fault. My idea of an atv, is a machine that can go
through ALL TERRAIN, and if we keep them clean, they should last and be able to handle the load.

I just got through pulling the hub off and it looks like the axle survived, just need a new hub. Whats the best way to prevent this from happening in the future? Should I add the hubs to my "checklist" and remove and clean them every couple months?
