Scrambler clutch noises
#1
My clutch is rubbing the inside of the outer cover. What could cause this problem? Could the outer cover be warped? Could the inner cover be distorted or cracked? Nothing is cracked and everything seems pretty solid. If I pull to the left and down the noise goes away.
Anybody have any ideas what the fix would be?
Thanks.

have you done any clutch mods or service recently or at all?
well just speaking of past experience, the reason i say this, is cuz i adjusted my secondary clutch one time on my 259 trail boss and i didnt torque the main bolt properly and later i heard a strange noise much like you describe. pulled the cover and saw that it was the secondary clutch bolt had come loose allowing the clutch pulley to just "float" inside the case.
hope this helps,,,,,,,,

It could be either front, back, or both covers are warped. Are they loose at all? Could one of the rear mounting bolts come loose? Does it happen all the time or just when accellerating or at hi speeds? If this is the case it could be worn or broken motor mounts.

It is actually at idle or when the primary clutch comes back down at idle. I grabbed the cover and pushed or pulled on it to try to find a sweet spot where it doesn't rub, but no luck.
Would the newer ('02 and up) clutch covers fit on my '98?

I think it will, but I think you have to buy both front and back. Not positive though. Last thing before I would say it was a warped cover would be to look along the line of what scramblerx suggested above. Check you clutch for excessive wear or loose components. Make sure it is not worn out to where it is not running true. Look for a wobble or sloppiness. If all of that is good try to figure out if either inner, outter, or both covers are warped. Keep us updated.

Thanks for the help guys. I will keep you updated on what I find. By the way, how am I supposed to tell if the cover is warped? Will it be that noticable? If it is warped I will definately go with the newer style cover, which isn't supposed to warp.

I had the same problem with my 99. The dealer said it was common after a little time on the machines. The newer scramblers have a different cover than the earlier ones. the dealer put a cover for the newer scramblers on and didn't even charge me. no problems ever since.
