Yes that dealer is an idiot! But that is the closest Polaris dealer to me, 15 miles as compaired to 45 miles to a good dealer. If I was going to have my atv worked on or was going to buy a new atv I would drive farther to ANY dealer rather than go to the idiot.

I use filter oil also. I think it is the same as Quadfather...the red oil right?? Since dealers are not up to speed here I just use gasoline and off the oil goes. Can this harm the filter in any way??? After I wash with boiling water and soap.

I did learn enough to let the oil tack up and dry a bit before re-installing the filter. Before I just added oil, stuck it right away in the quad...wasn't getting enough air. Live and learn!

Gasoline will supposedly eat the glue on the seam. If you look in the back of one of the many ATV mags out now, some companies sell the PJ1 filter oil in six packs at a very fair price.

Do not use mineral spirits or gasoline to clean the filter!
Use soapy water (dish soap) or the K&N kit which includes the air filter oil and the cleaner.

K&N or Amsoil air filter oil; not motor oil, not fork oil, not salad oil or tuna oil ... AIR FILTER OIL!

K&N air filter oil is easy to use, but expensive. It comes in an aerosol can and you spray it on. K&N "Recharger Filter Care Service Kit" p/n 99-5000 is available at many motorcycle/atv and auto parts stores and includes an aerosol can of oil and a bottle of their detergent.

Amsoil sells a squeeze-bottle of air filter oil. You oil the filter and work it in. It is *very* tacky, designed to catch the dirt *without* restricting airflow. (note Xplor's comment "...the quad...wasn't getting enough air." I assume the "red oil" he is refering to is the K&N oil)

I have and still do use *both*. I think the Amsoil filter oil is better (for foam filters), but you need a spray oil to get it between the pleats of a K&N filter.

Either case, wash with warm soapy water, rinse, and allow to completly dry before re-oiling.

You can find info about the Amsoil air filter oil at http://www.amsoil.com/products/afo.html

A K&N filter is made of gauze, use the K&N filter cleaner, a Uni_Filter is a foam filter, when I bought mine, the directions stated to use 100% mineral spirits, thats what I've used for a year on mine, they are still like new.

I just noticed in my manual last night it does not say to oil the outer filter (pre-filter) on my scrambler. Is this just a mistake or is it supposed to run dry?
