I just got my new UNI filter today and I was wondering what most of you use to oil yours. I know they make special filter oils, but are they really any better than plain motor oil?

In my opinion, I wouldn't spend the money on "filter oils". They may be better, I don't know. But I just use the oil that's going into the engine. It's handy and I've never had a problem. It's also what all my friends use.

In one word YES! It is much tackier and trraps the dirt much better. It is also much easier to clean when it becomes dirty.

I like the PJ1 foam filter oil. I wash the filters in 100% mineral spirits, let them set over night to dry, then put them in a large ziplock baggy, one at a time, and move it around with one hand, while I spray oil onto it with the other. I then let them set out on a clean surface in basement overnight to dry, then put them in a clean baggy for future use. I bought 3 Uni-Filters, so I don't have down time waiting while a dirty one dries.

Mr. Buster,

Either Sherwin Williams, or any decent paint supply store will have mineral spirits. Home Depot sells it also. Sometimes Sherwin Williams has it on sale for $1.99 a gallon, if you buy a 5 gallon jug of it. In single gallon jugs, they usually want around $2.99 a gallon. It doesn't eat the glue used to join the seam in the filter together, and cleans as well or better than anything.

I became a Polaris owner last spring when I bought a 1989 250 Trail Boss 4x4. When I asked for filter oil at my local Polaris dealer he sold me "Fork Oil" I asked him why, he said it was cheaper, and he didn't stock foam filter oil. Does any body have any comments on that?

I have seen Honda recommend via a tag on the bike , to lube their foam filter in 90 weight gear oil . (XR600)

UNI filter oil has a familiar *hypoid* smell .

I use filter oils too , some are so nasty , I sure hope they work better .

Would you put filter oil in your forks? Your dealer is an idiot.
