It sounds like you're on to something there with the vaccum problem. When it is idling try spraying some carburator cleaner or A LITTLE ether on & around the carb & boot between the carb & engine. If the rpms increase, you have an air leak. If not, then I think it has something to do with the cut snorkel. If your machine has a CV ( constant velocity ) carb, a person can't alter the intake in any way or it will run like sheeeot. Well, you can do it, but it requires a new spring inside the carb to compensate for the extra air you're feeding it. Did you just do this intake mod or has it been done for awhile & just now your problems came up???? If you just did it, than it's a high possibility that's what the problem is & if you did it a long time ago I would check for air leaks. Hope something I said helps.

Well this is a different carb is a 40mm carb off a 500HO & I'm putting it on a 700. I talk to rick ritter today and he said I probably need to go will a smaller pilot jet. When I was taking the pilot out I took the bowl off and it had water in it That wouldn't make it run rich would it? I will have to go to the dealer to get another pilot. I have been testing it with a little tape over the snorkle.

Maybe someone else can chime in here about the 500ho carb, but I'd almost bet that it's the same carb used on the Scrambler 500 H.O. & if it is a person can't alter the intake without negitive results. The engine is exactly the same, so I'd think the carb is too! When I bought my Scrambler I asked the dealer about removing the snorkel or lid for more power & he said it wouldn't run. So....... as soon as I got home with it I pulled the lid, ran like crap. Put the lid on, took off the snorkel, ran like crap. Put it all back together & haven't screwed with it since. See, with these type of carbs, all that is connected to your thumb, is the "butterfly". The slide is opened through engine vaccum. Where as non-CV carbs the slide is connected to your throttle cable. A CV carb needs the proper engine vaccum to open correctly with the spring inside it that it's tuned for. If its opened up for a free-er flow, the spring that opens the slide has to be changed for it to operate with its new found air flow. I hope for your sake, it's all in the pilot jet ( and the H2O you found in the bowl ) Also, because the idle is goofy, check for an air leak like I said above. The tinyest microscopic hole or crack can really F with the idle on small engines. Good luck & keep us posted.

The Intake AND exhaust can be altered, notice they make Pipes, filters, and airboxmods for these machines, as well as adding snorkels for deep water running. ALL of this alters the Intake or Exhaust. Im not sure what your dealer is telling you. But you have to be sure to Compensate for it with proper jetting. By taking your Airbox lidd off, of course its gonna run bad because it hasn't been jetted to run with the airbox lid off.

Yes & no, read again what I said above about CV carbs. This particular type of carb needs the proper intake volume, charge, signal whatever you want to call it for the slide to open correctly. A regular carb the slide is directly connected to the thumb or twist, a CV relies on a diaphram ( contolled by intake volume ) to open the slide. All thats connected to your right hand is the butterfly that let air in. Yes jetting still plays a cruciel role, but so does intake volume on these type of carbs, ( CV )

My Sportsman Carb is the same way, Vacuum.. ANd If anything is added, then its a simple rejet. If hes using a standard 500HO carb thats standard on the sportsman as well as the scrambler, there is a ton of pipes, filters, cams, etcc on the market that change the volume of air coming into or going out of the engine, the only Modification needed for all of this is Jetting, or in extreme case, a Larger carb. The change in intake volume would need to be massive to really even to begin to effect these carbs... I have taken My Airbox lid completely off and had it run fine with going up a few sizes in jetting. Cant get a whole lot more air in than that ,other than turbo.

I would like to thank every one for there tips. I finally got it tuned I put the stock 40mm spring back in and it still had the flat spot. I put the clip thats on the needle in the 3rd notch and it still had the flat spot and studder so I moved the clip to the 2nd notch and that improved it alot. I had tape over the snorkle because I thought i had it cut to far down but after taking the tape off with the clip in the 2nd notch it cured my problem This thing will run like a scalded dog.
