Two Way Communicators
#1
I'm in the market for a two way radio system to communicate between me any my wife and buds. I've been messing around with trying to set up something cheap with a motorola set I bought at walmart and am wondering if it would be best to go with a Chatterbox setup which would allow me to listen to music while riding also and includes the headset for a helmet. Anyone here use anything? Any suggestions?

2 buddies and I just installed some Motocomm headsets and used some old Cobra radios I had laying around. They worked great except there was a lot of wind noise at 30 mph and above. Otherwise they are excellent.

I had three MotoComm headsets i used with my Motorola Distance DPS radios. (Those were from when "real" walkie-talkies were very expensive). They made riding with my dad and friends so much more fun. After a few years in the elements, though, the headsets stopped working. They definetly made the ride much more enjoyable. If you have never tried these, and like riding, you really should.
Another thing i tried a few weeks ago was using the cell phones. We have free calling between our phones, so we jsut used the headsets and placed a call, then put the phones in our pockets. THe plus with that is that we could talk without pushing a button and we could both talk at once, but as a negative: you need cell phone reception, which is obviously not always available where you ride, only two can have a conversation, and the headset got uncomfortable, unlike the MotoComm headsets which mount inside the helmet.

Here is the MotoComm headset i had: Headset . Note that this one has the connector with the two little jacks on it, you have to make sure that that is what your radio has. If not, i think MotoComm makes a set with the other single pin design.
Also make sure that if you get a set, it is push-to-talk (PTT) and not voice activated (VOX). VOX doesnt work with the wind noise from atv's, even if it says it does.

Alot of cell phones have ear buds available. The cell phone I use (Nokia 6200) has an FM radio built into it, and I set the phone on auto answer, it will cancel the music, ring one time and then answer automatically. I put the headphones on before I put my helmet on and works great. Most cell phone plans have free calls on nights and weekends!
