Default need 2 stroke advice

I own a 1996 kodiak 400. Compared to it how will a 1997 400 sportsman 2 stroke do on steep up hill and in deep mud. I also need a service manual but finding it hard to find on on this model. What other model is simular to this one. I will pick the sportsman up in 2 weeks and I am trying to get ready for it. I want to service it right away. I am a Industrial Mechanic and love manuals but you guys experience will be a lot more help to me. So in the future please excuse some of the stupid questions I will ask.

Thanks Troy

You can get a manual from your Poo dealer. The 400 2-stroke will totally anhilate anybody's 400 4-stroke. Not even a fair fight. You will love it. Do a search on here for Xplorer (Explorer) 400 and read what happy owners have to say. It's about 36hp stock and can be modded anywhere up to 90 horse.

Polaris' engines are made by, I believe, Fuji in Japan. Or at least they used to be. Its a good engine, tough and powerful. The two problems I've seen is that most people who are serious replace the pistion with a Wisco because the stockers can break a skirt, and sometimes the water pump seal will go bad. But neither is hard to fix. In fact, that's the beauty of a 2 stroke - no valves, no cam, no timing chain, etc. It is such a simple engine. To me, that's what I want on a 4 wheeler, something simple and reliable.

You need 2 stroke advise. Well you stroke it more than twice and your playing with it.

I own a 97 sportsman 400, and I have been very disappointed with its power.

First off, ever since I bought it in 1998, the machine has pinged like crazy and has felt very soft on the top end in performance. I rode an older 93 350 bigboss 6x6, which felt like it had way more power than my 700.

Last week I finally retarded the timing, and low and behold the pinging went away, and I had a more powerfull machine. I am slowly working the bugs out of it.

I have been wanting to upgrade to a 4 stroke 500 HO, I am sick of the lack of low-end grunt with my 2 stroke.
