More than likely the shift box switch(about $130) is the problem along with worn out shift box parts. It sends the power to the awd button and light then to the front wheels.Basically you've bypassed the switch and button. People have done it and posted on the forum. If you want to run a toggle that would be better imo and not have constant power to the hubs.

Bulb is blown do u think if I changed bulb and shift box switch it would go back to normal?? Or is toggle sufficient?? I have belt from my 700 on this explorer 400 that might explain why shift box parts got worn cuz it does shift hard..

If you want to spend the 130 bucks,PLUS as I mentioned it may be worn parts in the shift box that that are not allowing the switch to operate.Shift box wear was a normal problem as they got older. If you have awd now and can run a toggle, that should be ok. The choice is yours. Get the right belt too. #3211077

If you are stuck you can use Automatic Tranmission fluid "Type F" according to my Clymer Manual .
