Speed sensor trouble . . .
#1
I have a 2000 Sportsman 500, the speedo has never worked. I was told by the dealer it was the speed sensor. I found a used speed sensor on Ebay for a much better-than-dealer price and picked it up. Still no speedo. So, I was talking with someone last night and he was saying I should hook it up to a v/o meter and test the resistance while moving a screw driver in-front of the sensor. Will this actually tell me if either/both sensors are bad? Is it possible that the speedo is bad? The miles do not show up on the odometer or the needle to show how fast I am going does not move.
Thanks for any assistance,

What about the hour meter and backlight on the speedo? Working? That probably sound very obvious, making sure its getting 12volts, but I had to ask. I'm on my second wheel sensor too. The new one worked great for a while but eventually failed. It think it is when lots of mud gets wedged between the sensor and brake disk. The face of the sensor gets all scratched up. Logically, that SHOULDN'T make it not work, just being scratched up, but that is the only outward change I can see. Or maybe I'm just cursed.
Before you invest a lot of money in one, especially a whole setup as suggested earlier, I would look at a TrailTech aftermarket speedo unit. They are compact, lightweight and good looking. I'm not much for digital displays but it offers a lot of features.

Yes, the speedo gets power and lights up, the hour meter is tracking hours.
Did some testing last night and I have no idea what I am doing. :-O
I did find that on the 2000+ models there is a little shield that covers the speed sensor.
I think I am just going to use my GPS for now.

You know, a GPS is a really smart solution! Even if you didn't already have one, you could buy one of the inexpensive units for what you'd spend fixing the speedometer. And for a little more money you can get a mapping one. Good idea, why didn't I think of that? I must be slipping in my old age.
