Default 97 scrambler 400 starter problem

Dealer says I need a new starter and flywheel? Not sure if I trust his estimate. Says it will cost me close to $500 to replace. What is this flywheel he is talking about? Assuming the starter is gone, what parts should I need if I can buy them on ebay? Is it a difficult job to do myself? I found a starter on ebay for $59. Dealer quoted me $250. What should I look for to be certian that it is actually shot? Hate to spend money if it really isn't shot.

Any help would be appreciated.

The ring gear is probably worn on your flywheel . Polaris does not sell the ring gear seperately . HOWEVER ---- I have a bunch of them (ring gears) at my shop . I can replace the ring gear for you ,I'll give you a ring gear .

The starter may be junk , very possible , it may also be repairable . It is possible to repair it for under $125 . A new starter will set you back about $225.

The starter bendix is also another item that may need cleaned or replaced cleaning is free . A new bendix is about $130 .

This is all work that a person can do at home with little difficulty , give me a ring on the phone at 618-644-3211 , I'll gladly share any information with you on your starter trouble .

Than you for all your insight Rick.

Well, I sure am glad I chose to hold off on having the dealer do the work. Went for my first ride since getting it back. Took a blast around the lake, stopped at a friends house for a quick visit, jumped back on my bike nd forgot that the starter was supposed to be shot. Hit the start button , and she fired right up. Worked flawlwees all day. Wow! And to think I was considering letting them replace it for $500. Guess I'll think twice about going back to that dealer.

One more thing Rick. I purchased a Stage I kit off you a couple years ago. What should my jetting be on this bike. I prefer a size that I can run through all 4 seasons.

Thanks again

Zach,

One thing that alot of people dont know or overlook is that the starters have a drain at the bottom that NEEDS to be drained if you drive in deep water. It should be drained anyways just to get out any standing water. If not then the bendix will rust. Everything inside will rust but if water is drained you wont have a problem.

A buddy of mine had some starter problems where it would work sometimes and not others. One of his problems was the positive cable had worked back and forth over the years and finally broke off of the starter. He was dragging it after bouncing over some rock. So take the skid plate off the bottom of the quad and look in there for yourself and check to see if the bolts are falling out (his other problem) and make sure everything looks ok.

P.S. Did the dealer take your recoil housing off or have you had a problem where your starter is spinning but the motor is not? Just wondering why they think you need a flywheel.
