No problem Hondabuster. I am glad that it is still possible to create a multi-brand thread without any flaming. Not trying to be brandist, but often any discussion over awd or the like results in some nasty posts, but this one stayed clean and calm.
Have a nice day.

I had wondered why my 99 Xplorer was so much more difficult to steer while in AWD.
I had a test ride on an 04 SP700 and was amazed in how easy it was to drive around while AWD was engaged.... now I understand why.
With my Xplorer, the AWD button engages the hubs directly, and since mine uses 3 chains, everything is directly driven, so in my case, all 4 wheels are always engaged when AWD is on.

Hey GST97. I just looked at your drive train. You appear to have the same type of hubs as many of the Sportsmans. However, the interresting thing is it appears you only have a 9% difference in front to rear gear ratios instead of the 17%. This might provide a small enough difference that your fronts might stay locked in dirt, causing heavy steering. Seems to me, if you replaced your center shaft 22 tooth sprocket with a 20 tooth you would get about 19% and it may solve your problem. I had always wondered why Polaris chose 17-20%. I assumed that it was because the rear wheels always slip slightly in dirt and the 17% would keep the front from engaging. You may have just answered that question. Thanks

I had done some tests in the snow this winter...
The fronts spin just like the rears.
I could not tell any difference in when they spin. Even while going slowly through heavy snow, I could notice the fronts slip when the rears didn't even appear to be.
The steering is heavier, but I really don't mind it. I am a strong enough guy that I hardly notice it any more.
After driving around the newer ones, I would like the nice steering, but the EBS would have to come out. Call me wierd, but I hated it. I like myself to be in control of the braking, not the machine.... especially since only the rears have EBS. Tight turning, letting off the gas and the rears are trying to slow down is a bad combination for me
