Changing the Transmission fluid
#1
I went to the dealer to buy the fluid so I can change the transmission fluid and gearcase fluid on my 01 SP400. I asked the dealer what I needed and he tried to sell me a kit with grease and hub oil and all that, a bunch of stuff I didn't need because I just did the hubs awhile ago and I have my own grease. Getting back to my question. The dealer gave me a quart bottle of AGL ATV gearcase Lubricant part # 2873602 to use in the transmission and a 8 oz bottle of ATV front gear drive fluid, is this correct??? I looked in the generic owners manual and the part number was different for the transmission and the gearcase fluid was supposed to be GL5 80-90. I'm guessing the transmission fluid covers the rear gearcase so the 8 oz bottle if only for the front. Any help with this is appreciated. BART

the AGL is correct for the tranny, my '05 700 EFI says something like 15 oz, but it is a fill to the hole, so don't even think I could have got in the full 15 oz....
as far as the differential, not sure on the '01 400 machine....on the '05 machines we run 'On Demand Drive Fluid' in the front, I run the 'Front Drive Fluid', which is part number 2871653 in the rear. In the manual it is called 'ATV Angle Drive Fluid', but thats not what is on the bottle, but the part number is the 2871653.
The differences in these fluids is viscosity. The 'On Demand' fluid is much thinner than the 'Front Drive Fluid'. Even though one of the dealers here says they put the 'Front drive' fluid in both the front and rear, I stuck with the 'On Demand' fluid for the front. The 'On Demand Drive Hub' fluid is part number 2871654.
I would think that in '01 that the 'Front' fluid would work in both the front and rear, I tried to find the 400 sportsman in Polaris manuals, but its not there, only the supplements...

I've done this before, but . . ..
The front housings get GL-5 80W-90 oil, whether "standard" or "on demand" Proper level is even with the bottom of the fill hole.
Could go with GL-5 75W-90 synthetic if you were looking for a bit lighter oil.
The '01 Sportsman 400 / 500 tranny BOTH use AGL, 948 milliliters (1 Qt.) from empty. You won't get it empty when draining it, as some oil stays in the front output shaft (snorkel). Try about 24 oz. to start, then check the level with the dipstick. Fill to the "full" mark. (Yes the tranny oil also covers the rear drive.)
BTW, use some thread sealant on the drain plug when installing it and torque it to about 12 foot pounds. These will strip at 16 pounds easily!!!!
>>> You COULD substitute Dexron III / Mercon ATF for the AGL if you wanted to save a few $$$. It is the SAME thing except for the color.
Oh, and it's 400 Milliliters of AGL in the '05 700 EFI tranny.
How do I know all of this stuff? I worked for the company that makes the powertrain components for Polaris for seven years. My Fiance' still does, matter of fact, tonight she's building trannies for the 800!

I think Phil got it about right. I have the same bike as you. I put the whole quart of AGL into the tranny, but if I remember right the front gearcase only takes about 5 oz of the 8oz bottle. The 01's are different than the new bikes. The tranny is just a chaincase, and the oil lubes the tranny and all of the rear end components. The front gear case is just gear oil, smell the 8oz bottle and it should smell strong like gear oil. I've had some dealers try and sell you the fluids for the newer models.
