Default Scrambler 400 vs. 500

Hey everyone, my first time posting here, just stumbled across this forum yesterday. I am in the process of buying a Scrambler, and I am struggling with the decision of a 400 vs. a 500. Either way, I will buy the 4x4 model. The last time I went riding I borrowed a 1996 400 4x4 and loved it. Most of the used stuff I find is a 500. When I ride, it is mostly trails, mudding, etc., but I love to go as fast as I can at the same time (don't we all). What would you suggest, a 400 or 500? It is easier to "mod up" the 400, right? What are the main differences between the 400 and 500 that I need to think about when buying. Thanks for any and all help!

the 500 is better for low end grunt and torq, and would probably be more reliable and a better mudder.

The 400 can be modded to be much faster, more bang for you mod bucks.
If you think you will be wanting much more speed and performance with upgrades than stock, go with the 400.

All it comes down to is 2 stroke vs 4 stroke, and all the pros and cons that come with each. jimmypsp700 already stated the biggest difference, which is the 2 strokes "more bang for your mod bucks".

IMO you are best off with getting an '01, '02 or '03 500 (if you are going used). I saw some pretty good deals on these year models, plus they have pretty much all the upgrades as the new ones. IMO these would be the most reliable way to go, again, if you are buying used.

I've had both i and i would say if you're going to keep it stock go with the 500, and if you plan on modding it the 400 is the better choice.

Power Sports in Abrams just north of Green Bay has an '02 400 X. Last of the 2-strokes and coolest Scrammy in my opinion. I didn't look too close (I was sled shopping), but it seemed in good shape.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I was leaning at the 400 before I posted this question, and I guess I haven't heard a great arguement to go the other way. Sounds like the 400 can be a lot more fun if you are willing to put the time and effort into making it that way. Now the trick is finding one that is in good shape yet.

Thanks for the tip on the one in Abrams. Anyone else with any info please pass it on. Thanks again!

I would agree with everyone above.
Another thing is the long travel rebound adjustable rezi rear shock on the 2000-2003 models. Better boingers.
Get concentric drive too (on all later models).

You can find a lot of good used deals in the auto/RV trader swapper that's free at Mijers etc.
You may also be able to find some new '03s at dealers.
