ATV Fluids at auto parts store?
Now that I got this thing running (2000 Xplorer 250 4x4), I am getting a chance to go through and check everything.
I notice the front wheels aren't rolling freely so I pull them off thinking the brakes are sticking. Well they were kind of sticking some, but that's not the problem. There is NO fluid in the hubs (both), none will come out of the allen screw plug even when turned over to the bottom side.
I want to take the hub apart and check the internals but I need some fluid to put bacck in it. Of course the manuals say to use Polaris everything. Does anyone know if I can get anything equivilent to it at an auto parts store? If so, what actually is it?
I also want to change out all of the rest of the fluids. I would like to use lubricants that I can buy at any parts store if possible. Any help on what to use?

the hub fluid used to be atf type f but they quit using that back in the early '90s. the fluid breaks down too quick. as for the gearcase its some type of synthetic. have no idea what if anything is eq. be sure to check your hub seals, thats probably where your fluid went. 2000 i believe has gearcase in front, its 80-90w gear oil.

As said before, the hubs were dry on this newly acquired 2000 Xplorer. There was some gritty brownish rust colored moist remnants of fluid in/on the left outermost bearing area. When I pulled the hub off, a small amount of DARK nasty fluid did spill out at the area where the seal rides. The left outermost bearing was rusted and froze up, but the inner bearing that the hub rides on was actaully still somewhat rolling. The races are smooth so I don't plan on replacing them. These bearings are just the inner and outer bearings that the hub rides on.
So that leads me to this question.
Should I go past the elec./mech clutch and mess with the bearings that are the bottom of the strut housing? I've heard that you really don't want to start messing with them. I did carefully slide the clutch off of the shaft and look at those bearings and they looked good.
I've got bearings for the hubs, so those will at least be new.
Any advice?
