I have a chance to get a 97 Explorer. this thing was owned by a retired couple, they had a pair, they just traded for the a pair of Sportsmans. The Explorer is in showroom condition, no scratches in the plastic, orig tires still in great shape. doesnt look like its be rode very much at all. The dealer is asking $4100. Is this a good price? It doesn't have the conetic drive, is this a problem? It has the chain front drive, is that a problem? Need to make a desision quick. Please tell me what you know. I want a good trail ridder, but I want to go play in the mud and explore were there are no trails. I can't do that with my 99 Sport. Any thoughts on any of this would be great. thanks

All there is to say buy it just check it over real good, the front chains just take a little longer to maintain but there no big problem.

I am not up to soeed on prices down in the states but I can tell you not to worry about the front chains. I own a 98 and the rear chain needed adjusting about 4 times in 2 years. I have never touched the front or middle chain. The middle one I wax occasionally but since the front one is kind of hidden, I do not get much wax or lube on it. Even with the lack of maintenance up front and heavy riding it has stood up to the task!

Go to www.kbb.com and see what the blue book is on that machine. Off hand, that price sounds a little high, but not out of the ball park. I have a 98 with the 3 chain system. It is a little more maintenance to lube and adjust three chains, but I wouldn't let it influence your decision. If the machine runs good and you see no major problems, I would go for it. Offer them $3,500 and see if they will bite. If you get it, post a thread and I will explain how to adjust the three chain system.

I looked up the price for you. The retail on that machine is $3,905. If its in great condition, it may be worth the $4,100. Try an talk them down a little. Hope this helps.

Thanks MagnumMudMan,
I'm going to talk to the bank in the morning. I'm taking a hit on trading my sport, but this is the one I should have got in the first place. I've regreted getting a sport type bike after the first month. Can't ride in the winter (and theres a lot of winter here) can't go mudding, can't go exploring. Been stuck 3 times, alone and lifting even just the rear of that 500+ thing is a workout. So this is what fits my needs and wants the best. Thanks again. everyone keep posting, I want as much knowledge as I can get

Bruce
