Default GPS ?

OK.. so I went and bought a GPS based on the things I read in this post (a Garmin60CSx)... but as is, it is very basic. seems like they get you right where they want you since it now seems I will have to buy the software for the maps. $100+ for each one at that. I want the off road one as well as the US city maps. so I guess I have to spend an additional $200+ on it now.

Or am I missing something here? Is there some other way? A map product that any of you could recommend? Etc...

thanks

the legend C has internel non-expandable memory 24MB, the legend CX has 32MB expandable memory and it's price is around $250 and think it is well worth it. And the City Navigator V7 CD is great also around $100. I really can't stress enough on getting the expandable memory cause as long as you can get transflash micro SD cards you will have a lot of memory right now I have 512MB for around $50 for a Sandisk Transflash Micro SD. In the near future I suspect you will be able to get 1G. The City Nav. V7 CD takes up a lot of storage as far as memory goes. The green screen vs. color is like night and day. The color screen is so much better. The green screen you can see it better at night with the backlighting on. During the day and if there is a glare it's not great at all. With the 512MB Card I can have very very detailed maps from miss. through tx. all the way up the United States. and still have about 200MB left over. It's wonderful to have that many states with that much detail at your disposal. There is also another new model out the Venture CX that is alittle cheaper than the Legend CX that looks cool too. Check this website out that's where I bought all my stuff from and there shipping is good and there prices seem to be pretty good also.

I use a Garmin Etrex Legend with a Ram handlebar mount. Works excellent and I ride HARD!!!

Cant go wrong with $130 for GPS and $30 for mount...$160 well spent.

You can see it in my video.

Alright! I have decided to buy a cheap but effective GPS...

I am leaning toward the Garmin Etrex Legend like Elimin8r.........can I go wrong with this?

I really don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on maps and junk.....just want a good featured/solid entry level GPS

Any suggestions???

If you want a very soild GPS that is above entry level, but available at today's entry level price becasue it has been replaced by a new model, I would go with the Magellan Sport Trak Pro, If you want to go a little fancier, then go with the Merrridean...

I would think you should be able to get a Sport trak between 175 and 225, The merridean will set you back a few more dollars.... I can tell you that the SPort Trak is rugged, dependable, and accurate......

I sold my Sport Trak this spring and upgraded to the Magellan Exlporist 600, I love the new unit, just getting the old info (waypoints etc.) into the new format is turning out to be a Pain in the butt.

Just My 2 Cents,

I am looking for a GPS for my dad in Wisconsin that will work in cold weather and mount on his ATV. He has heart problems and last year he was lost in the woods. Do these work in wooded areas? What type would you recommend that would show trails, lakes and perhaps hunting areas in Northern Wisconsin? Would my mother be able to find him somehow at home? Worried daughter in Texas.

ok, most GPS's only recieve information from satillites, they do not send information. There are some gps's that to send information ack and for to another unit (ie: walkie talkie type) but they range is about 2 miles - 2 miles by the way the crow fly's is quite a bit of distance, but you will need two units one for him and one for her.

Also understand that hiking GPS's are different thatn highways ones, and for the most part you can't use them for both highway and hiking, seeing that you posting in this forum I am assuming your looking for one for your atv.

knowing the above here are some options:

Personal locater beacon - this will send messages to search and rescue teams on your precise location - remember you father will have to turn it on and activate if he understands that he is lost and is willing to admit it (most men won't admit they are lost)

something like this may work too

Something like this is a walkie talkie that send and recieves GPS location to each other - you would need two.

I have this, I am very happy with, it takes a little bit of learning, but it can be downloaded onto a computer to show his favorite places to go. this would be a good thing for rescuers to know, so thye can find him. It will laydown breadcrumbs so he can find his way back, if you show him how to read the unit.

(I use this for my search and rescue team members)

if you need more help send me a PM and I can help some more
