clutch question on scrammy.
#1
I looked at HPD's clutch spring chart and dyno graph and am wondering if I am loosing power by running a polaris yellow spring in my primary clutch. I can tell you this much the scrambler certainly feels alot faster and I can get through the trails alot faster then I could with my EPI orange. just curious.
Also i am thinking of adjusting the secondary or getting a new spring. Is the stock secondary set in the 2-2 position? would there be any benefit of going to a 2-1 setting for trail riding?
last but not least should I look into getting a different secondary clutch spring? A polaris silver or Gold? maybe a HPD purple or polaris black.? I would prefer a polaris spring and HPD seems to thing the gold would be a good choice reading over there webste.
also a new belt is in order, being a fairly low mod machine, should I get an hpd belt or just polaris's nicest?

conig, you're probably not loosing power in the spring. its just being transfer differently. the spring rates will cause shift out to be different. if you're riding faster with one spring and thats what you want then its a set up to stay with. by changing the secondary setting it will control shifting to a point. by setting to 2-1, 2 being on the shaeave and 1 on the helix, you will tighten the pretension and the clutch will take longer to shift, giving you a little more rpm on the shift, but also taking longer to fully shift out. what i found works is to run slightly more side load (stiffer seconday spring), but set at the same pretension or close to it. if you have stock sec. set up don't run too heavy of a spring as this will cause belt problems too. this is what ive found over the past few yrs of building clutches for everything from trail riding, mudding, to drags. aaen has a clutch tuning book that is alot of help for tuning, too.

Your yellow spring has a good shift rate but a low engagment. You may want to try a Brown spring close to the same rate but a little higher engagment. On the secondary I agree with Jeffro but I am partcial to the Aaen blue secondary spring set at 2-2 it has good backshift and you wont loose as much topend as some of the stiffer springs. On the belts I ran a Dayco on my old 425 Magnum and it wore the front sheave out(cut grooves in it)now I run stock Polaris belts but keep a close measurment on them and replace them when the get close to being out of specs.

parts unlimited has a belt with their name on it too. dont know who makes it for them, but about 1/2 cost of polaris. ive been running one for racing for almost 2 yrs and no problems. they also have a 1yr limited waranty on them. im sure they wont cover for wear or flat spotting, but for a break or something.

ftwflh I dug through posts for awhile and I figured you were going to mention that spring. you seem to be an advocate for it.
I'll look into the polaris brown, but I really don;t want my engagement all that higher. the epi I had was 70pounds for engagement, and in 90% of situations it was great, but there were some times I could not get the traction I needed.
since I'm on the stock secondary, I guess I may go with a polaris gold. maybe I don;t understand pretension, but wouldn;t a 2/1 clutch setting be softer then a new spring? do you think I should just leave it alone?

conig, my bad. i was thinking of the clutch upside down. the stiffer setting would be 2 helix, 1 sheave. the gold spring you refered to is it the primary? in my book its listed as a really stiff spring, 100 installed, appr. 280 full shift, i believe the hpd is different. not all springs are coded the same. also what weights are you running?
you might try an aaen blue secondary set a the same pretensioned rate as stock, you'll have to measure this. it will give you more side load on the belt and still shift as good.
