we have one at the shop. ours looks ugly 500 green plastic w brown seat, but runs great - has 2 inch lift, +3 swingarm, and 26" mud runner tires. that thing is awesome in the mud and snow! unless in perfect cond even with plow and mower sounds little hi. maybe the seller is willing to deal a little? after all talking doesnt cost anything, but may save you some $$

the 400 explorer is oil injected and I believe the 96 was still a 2 stroke but please correct me if I'm wrong. My father-in-law recently bought a 94 polaris explorer during mid summer, it came with a warn 48" plow with the electric winch and brand new polaris brake pads for the front and back which we had to put on right away due to having no brakes. the plastic is all in great shape but will need tires this up coming summer. we had to adjust all three chains due to having way to much slack/play and they were laying on the slides. he got his for $1500 and hasn't had to do anything but put gas in it since the brakes/chain adjustments. I would say for $3k you should keep looking for something a bit newer in the 500 up class. you can find new sportsmans on ebay for around $3,500. check out breese lawn and garden they have a pretty good selection of quads.
