lookin at the scrambler
#1
ive got a few questions for those who have a scrambler 500. im lookin to buy buy one and im wondering how well the bike holds up, mainly trail riding? does the 4x4 work well in mud? i know the newer ones are shaft driven, is that holdind up well also? my friend used to have a 98 and i think it was a chain driven front diff. last, what do you think of the machine over all? thank you for your responses.

I think 97 was the only year that had chain driven both ways. and the 97 had the non h.o motor. I am also looking for one. There 4x4 capabilities are great, but not as good as my prairie. The scrambler suits my riding style better that the prairie even though it is very sporty for a ute. Another note, my buddies '98 scram w/ hot seat speed kit, and team clutch will beat my prairie w/ the listed mods. So that is always another thing to think about

IMO I think the scrambler is a very dependable bike. I ride my scrammy hard, honestly I beat the crap out of mine, and I always give up before the bike does. The 4x4 works awsome I can go anywhere the big utility go. You get the best of both worlds, it handle a lot better the any utility machine and will go in places that a sport bike can't go. I would stay with a 2000 or newer they have made some improvements over the older one that are nice.

The Scrambler is probly the best all around quad you could get. As far as trails go, it's at the top. The 4x4 system is the best out there for a quad like the Scrambler hands down. Just click the switch on the fly if you want AWD or if you want 2wd. If you wanna see what the Scrambler can handle in the mud then check out my pics. I never had any serious problems with my Scrambler. The only things I changed other than the obvious wear items were the front hub seals, rear brake caliper (let the pads wear down too far), and fan/temp sensor.
Overall the Scrambler is a just a killer trail quad, and just that. It isn't meant for work (while it can handle some) nor is it meant to be a MX racer. It doesn't shine at any particular thing. It's just one of the funnest most versatile quads you will ride on the trails, period.

thanks everyone for your input. ive always thought it would be a good bike for trail riding. i have an arctic cat 500 now and it does alright on trails and doin my hard work, but to keep hauling *** i thought the scrambler would be a fun bike. plus the girl friend likes it too.

yeah they do take a beating, i mean im 14 and ik lots of 14 year olds push thier quads to the limit, i have, tipped it twice, its held up great. Basically its tank and is super fun on the trials, the selectable 4 wheel drive is perfect for those few moments and it probably works best in the snow over alot of quads to. Making it the sport quad for all seasons, definate must buy

I was wondering how good your epi clutch kit works on your bike. Would u be able to get one for a roller clutch?I have a polaris orange primary with 53gram wieghts and I have white and yellow secondary spring out of the 700 sportsman. Do u think that 62 gram weights will work good or will they be too heavy.

ok for the most part the scrambler wil be reliable... but yesterday i had an issue. my scrambler from the start, if you had too much rear wheel spin, would randomly engage a front hub. hubs have plenty of fluid, and its done it from the start, and ive heard mine isnt the first to do this. well i was spinnin em out cuz i whipped it around doin a 180 (icy), and bam, the front left kicked in. well since the rear was doin roughly 45 or more mph (yea i was havin fun), the front kicked in harsh, and now in 4wd its clangin, yet the 4wd still works? im hopin i didnt blow a CV joint...280$ isnt fun.
but for the most part ive loved my scrambler. its fast for its engine and weight, still feels halfway light on the trails, and goes everywhere i wanted it to. now for the belt system, ive gone through 2 belts already, idk why its eatin em up. overall you should be happy with a scrambler
