How old is your son? For me it has been one of the best purchases I have ever made! Atv's are like anything when you give it to kids, If not supervised, of course they can be dangerous. But when supervised and proper safety and riding techniques are taught and always
demonstrated, then your son may find it to be a giant self esteem and pride builder like mine did. Oh yeah, and I'm pretty proud watching them too!!!

As long as you stick with one that will still be in business for a while you should be fine. The clones of the clones scare me a littlte

We have two Polaris 90's: a 2002 Sportsman 90, and a 2002 Scrambler 90.

These are great little ATV's! We bought these for our two boys for Christmas that year, they were very happy to say the least. Both bikes have run and held up very well since we purchased them new. We had to buy two larger bikes last fall because both boys had grown out of the 90's physically. I weigh about 210, and I can still scoot around on these things with no problems. They can be extremely fast! When I ride them I do pull a lot of wheelies because I have the weight and size, so I tend to sit towards the rear of the seat. The other nice thing about these bikes is the adjustable throttle lock out. By simply turning a screw in, or out, you can set the maximum amout of throttle available to the rider. This is a very nice feature to have as your kids are first learning. Both bikes are going up for sale since we don't have any other kids and our relatives with young kids live too far away. Otherwise, we would keep them, that's how much I like them.

The quad itself is decent quality, but we still didnt like ours. If you want it just for riding around flat yards, fields, and flat trails, then it is ok. But in rough terrain (even just a little rough), its small size and engine power become a problem. Its small width make it very tippy.

And the engine makes it hard to ride also. because it is so small, it takes about full throttle to get you moving with any acceleration, or over a hill or bump. Only problem is that full throttle often means wheelies (not a good thing on such a tiny quad!).

So if its just for your yard or some dirt roads or something, then it is a good choice. It seems to be made for that, and works great in those situations. But it is not too good for real trail riding.

Also, it may be too small for your son. It says it is for 12 and up, but that is just for liability. When we got ours, I was 12, and had troubles with my knees always hitting the front fenders (and I was small for my age). So if your son is 11 or 12, it may not be the best choice. But a test drive at the dealer for both of you might help you decide.

nice for a youngster but one thing I think Polaris should do to them is to offer the 90cc sportsmans with 4x4. at least now they have reverse. for the money your almost better off going with a larger quad that he can grow into, this way your investment grows with him as he gets older.

Well !
I don't think that I should go any bigger. He is only 5 Now. He is big for his age and can handle the 90 with the Throttle control of course.
I'm really scared of that 2 stroke crap. And the Water ,Stator issue .....I already have one polaris to work on ....I need something that I can let him clean and ride.....
I think that I'm going to go with the Yamaha Raptor 50. Its 4 stroke,Shaft drive. And its not really small like the Pred 50....The Body and frame are the same size as the 80's...I just wish they had a utility version....
Thanks

Now I'm not sure about the Raptor 50...The reveiws are not good. Apparntly Yamaha has put a Rev limiter on this machine that canot be modified....Its only has top speed of 12 MPH ....
This is crazy !

my little guy just turned two and he is having a blast on his battery operated quad. He has the whole basment to cruise. He is getting valuable lessons on the throttle and steering. When the weather is better he will be out in the yard. Man I can't wait until he is old enough for a gas unit
