shifter stuck?
#1
Check this one out guys, I just went out a little while ago to check wiring. I went to shift to drive and the shifter was tight as can be. I fooled around with it and finally got it working again. It seems that it was sticking in the gear case, so i pulled the plug and there was this greenish watery based fluid in there that smelled like fuel, LOL. Any thoughts to what might have caused this and what type of gear oil goes in there? Sorry for all the questions, my shop manual is on the way though. Thanks

Take your shift rods off the tranny and then see if you can move the shifter. If you can it is internal. If not take the shifter top off and see if it is half full of oil it may need oil or it may have some bad pieces in it.

How ironic,
I was just coming on to thank those who helped me with the same problem. My 500 sportsman was stuck in reverse and I just removed the shift rods from the shifter and it came right out of gear. I checked everything and put it together and its fine. All I can think is that the rod bound up a little when I put it in gear.
Thanks for the FREE help,
John
