Why does a ATV get such poor MPG when a car lets say the toyota echo which is a 4cyl and it gets 60MPG and has to haul more weight and has more power and a 800 twin Sportsman or any big ATv for that matter gets such poor MPG . I mean come on I know there is a diff in terrian but really when you think about it does not make alot of sense at least to me. The ATV manufactures must have a deal with the big oil companys. I know some are gonna say terrian has lot to do with it but put them both on a dirt road travelling the same speed.
Dont get me wrong I would still enjoy ATVing at 5mpg but there must be technology out there maybe that is what they should be focused on first.
Sorry for ranting I just felt the need to express my thoughts thanx for listening
Does the Toyota Echo pulls wheelies? lol

I will be lucky if I get 10 -12 mpg with the bigger carb (40mm) I have on the 700. I have not checked it yet but will in a day or two.

This is something I'm highly interested in I'm stuck between the 700-800 Polaris EFI, or a grizzly, but my concern is also gas, as I do 100+ mile trips without gas stations. I don't mind bringing a 5 gallon of gas with me, but not more then that. When I do these trips its lots of cruising at 40-50mph. I would of thought the 800 would get good mileage as with the dual exhaust it would breath better but I'm not sure now.
Someone here told me they got 75-80 miles on there 800, seeing that's only a 4.2 gallon tank I didn't think it was that bad, but now someone said they get 96 miles on there 700 EFI, well that's a big enough difference for just a bit more low end power and 2 mufflers that seem to be more for show then anything, as they there is only a cross over pipe between the 2 mufflers and the price difference is substancial too.

More info to anyone who has them please, as I'm researching now.
Thanks

What do you guys consider "broken in"? My 04.5 Sp600 has around 275 miles on it and 65 hours because it is mostly a work horse. I kept track of fuel economy just out of curiousity when I first bought it and I was lucky to get 10mpg. Of course running around in LO range a lot destroys any hopes of decent economy. I didn't buy a 600cc machine with fuel economy as a concern but didn't think it was going to be that bad. I know you aren't interested in the 600 Stumppuller but just thought I'd add my 2 cents in case you ran across one at a good price and were tempted. Stick to EFI if you want a big bore.

Well I can answer that question for you with a quickness. Our quads use a very ineffecient belt drive system for our tranmissions. I would hazard to guess that if we dumped the belt drive and went with a manual tranny and clutch setup we would almost double our fuel economy.

Another point is power costs in fuel. The more power you use/want the more fuel your going to burn.

I didn't but my 700 for the gas mileage either but it would be nice to get 200 miles out of a tank of gas. I guess the old saying is you got to pay to play. I'm think of fabricating a reserve gas tank where my tool box is under the seat. I don't think I can put a large tank in there but any extra gas would help.

how about a detachable spare tank on the rear rack? Say about 3" high and the same shape as the rack it's self. Just lock it down to the rack and have a fitting that allows quick connection into the fuel system. If it was built out of Heavy guage high grade plastic to fuel cell specs you could also strap your gear on top of the tank and still have use of the rack. Probably 5 gallons of fuel could be added that way...

70003, did you get your carb dialed in yet with the new cam and exhaust? Have you had the chance to compare it to a new 800? Is the 800 exhaust working out with the minor mods you had to make? Does it run cooler without the exhaust being jammed into that quick "y" pipe, fan run less?
