500 or 500 H.O.
Hey Guy's, I need some help. I have a 2000 sp 500 RSE with 190 hrs and 1300 miles on it. It started running terrible, so the polaris shop has it now. They said the cam is worn out flat. I have changed the oil at regular intervals, I dont know what happened. First problem I've ever had. My question is I would like to make it an H.O., if I have to spend the money on it. What do I need to make it an H.O. and is it worth spending the extra money to make it an H.O. any help would be appreciated. Also where is the best place to buy the parts. thanks Donny

weren't they all HOs after the 98 model year or was it an option?
THat cam should not be worn that quickly, i would question this or take it elsewhere.
The HO consisted of a hotter cam and crank and a 40 mm mikuni carb and I think an airbox mod.
If you do get a new cam i would put a hotter one in with more lift and maybe some other internal things to make it perform better while they are in there.

ya, after 98 all the 500's were high output.
I heard a while back that Polaris had a bad batch of cams and there were wearing out prematurely on the 500 motors. Hopefully someone else will chime in who can remember what year that was. It just might be 2000.
As far as the H.O. upgrade goes, it just might be a little pricey. I've heard a few who said they did it or said they know someone who did it but that's as much as I've ever heard. By the time you get the 40mm carb, hotter cam and crank I think you might be better off just replacing the stocker and selling your ride for a newer one with all the 2001 and up upgrades.
