Wallowing in the mud.

I'm intrigued with what seems to be the majority of this forum who are fascinated with riding one's ATV back and forth through a muddy bog. I'm a newbie to the sport and I'd rather work my way up a mountain pass than to search for the nearest mud hole to go through. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy an occasional stream crossing along the way, but I don't think I'll ever judge an outing by the amount of mud that left on my ATV at the end of the day.
Perhaps I'm spoiled by living in Colorado where endless trails are common place. If I was living in my former home state of Nebraska, I probably would be hitting the old watering hole to have some fun because there isn't alot of diversity there.
Being a Blueribbon Coalition member, I also wonder about the impact to National Forests and other public riding areas when ATV riders appear to target the muddiest areas. This doesn't appear to follow the tread lightly policy.
I'm not attacking anyone here, I just want to know what I'm missing with this "mud" thing.

"Mudding is a state of mind"
Either you love it or you hate it! As for us up here, the mudholes are directly in the trails. We sometimes hit the mud near the lake when the water goes down, but stick to the trails already implanted. We do not stray into the reeds or shallow water. Some respect the environment while others do not "tread lightly".
As for being "mud-crazy", go in and give it a shot! Get as dirty as you can...get stuck and have a riding buddy push. Do not forget to splatter him with a ton of mud!
Like my mom always said when I was young: "Try it, you will like it"!

Well JAnderson we are not all city boys. Just kidding. Some of us just like building big and bad four wheelers to see just how much crap we can go through. Don't get me wrong I do like to trailride also but like Xplor said "mudding is a state of mind"

Around here (Alberta) most of the trails have a mud hole on them somewhere. If you want to continue riding the trail you will have to go through the mud or go home. Not a good alternative. Most of the trails we ride are not exposed to heavy traffic so the damage is minimal. Mother Nature does the repair work very quickly. We have ATV designated areas and the trails there do take a beating but surprisingly Mother Nature fix's them too. It does take a little longer depending on the weather.
The main reason we ride mud is because it's “FUN”

I never did any real mudding until this summer. Got the nerve up to go in a big nasty hole, got pulled out, and then just went stark raving mad in it. Talk about fun. I made it through the other times after that. Learned a lot about how to do it that day too. Bad thing about it is trying to ride home in a new truck with light gray interior without ruining the seats. Lots of towels are in order. Cleanup is a bitch though.

Mudding also takes on a certain amount of talent and navigational skills. It's simply a blast to get together with friends and make an afternoon out of trail riding/mudding,than when you least expect it,there it is,the big huge mud hole that everyone's anticipated.
Who's going in first?Well, usually it's me.I enjoy feeling the 'bite' into the mud. It's also a real rush to watch your buddies fail to make it,after you just did.Oh boy,the ribbing starts.
Never run off a trail for mud, there's plenty of obsticles that mother nature provides on the existing trail.===Bill
