How long should a trailer be to haul an ATV, and what provisions for tie down should it have? Anything else you'd recommend on a trailer?

I have a 4x8 folding trailer that works good for mine. Just make sure the width inside the wheel wells is wide enough for your quad and that it's long enough for your quad. For tie downs, make sure there's good, solid points to attach to like the outer frame or welded brackets or sides. Also make sure it's rated high enough so it can hold the weight of your quad and any gear you might put in it. My trailer's rated at 900 lbs and my quad is about 560. My $.02.

Do you want the tie downs close to the front and rear of the quad, or do you want them further apart so that the straps angle forward and back? I'm assuming you use straps to hold down the quad during transport. Wheel chocks? What do you run the straps over, the tires?

It all depends on the trailer you decide on. If you went with a longer then 8' trailer, I would say you would want tie downs in the front, middle, and back. Having the straps angled like you mentioned would be the best situation, IMO, but in my case, they go pretty much straight across due to the size of trailer I have. I end up putting a third strap connected to the front of the trailer just to keep my ATV from moving back. I usually run the straps across a good solid point on my ATV, usually around the frame in front and around the rear bumper/grab bar. I haven't used wheel chocks but it may not be a bad idea.

On mine I put in 4 tie downs to a side(5x10 trailer) I went with 1/2 ft in (and into the center) on the ends and then 3 ft off of the corners. This way I can use the first (against the tongue) and the third and strap any gear or cooler against the back and use the loading ramp for bungie cords as needed. This is the one I have (just add a 4 ft beaver tail) Big Tex
