Auto Trans Fluid
#1
What kind of automatic transmission fluid can I use in Polaris automatic transmissions? Someone said you should not use regular ATF since it was not a lube type. Is this true? Can I use something other than the dealer's product?

Maverick,
What you refer to as an automatic transmission is not. The Polaris has a belt driven "automatic" with a drive clutch (on the engine) and a driven clutch (on the input to the gearbox, and a belt inbetween. It is the gearbox that you are referring to. The gearbox does no gear shifting at all, other than when you switch from forward to reverse or to low. It is simply a transfer case of sorts that gets power from the clutch system to the rear wheels. It consists of a bunch of gears, sprockets and chains. The belt and 2 clutches do all the "gear shifting".
Do not use ATF in the gear box. There is nothing hydraulic about the gearbox. It requires a good quality synthetic gear lube. Personally, for the quantity required and the infrequent changes required, I use the synthetic offering from Polaris. Others here do use other products with no problems. I am sure someone will be kind enough to provide info on other products.
My vote, us the Polaris stuff!

Use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in the front hubs and in the shifter mechanism. Use Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube (75W-90) in the front gear box and the transfer case. Use a good quality grease for the zerks(not zerts, as some people call them!!!!!!).

If your ATV is still under warranty, I would use the Polaris oil. It is higher priced than most stuff, but for how little it takes, it won't matter. I have heard about (but not experienced) some dealers being reluctant to honor warranty on bearings & such if a 'strange' oil is used. If it is out of warranty I wouldn't be afraid to follow Walexa's advice. Mobil synthetic is good stuff.

PS Walexa, how did the rad valve help performance? I am looking for a few cheap HP or MPH.

Farmr123,
I'm not real sure, since I had only run the 1st tank through before installation, and the first tank was premix. I do believe the throttle response and acceleration is better. You have to play with the jets(go down on main jet) a size or two to get optimum performance. I'm not sure if it was worth the $150 or not. I would probably do it again, since I wanted more hp without more noise. I really like the bike.
