Default 250 polaris explorer

I have a 2000 polaris 250 explorer, 2 cycle. when i am increasing the speed i hear a metalic tick, tick, which gets progressivly faster with speed. When i am coasting or going downhill the noise stops. It is hard to pinpoint , but it sounds like it may be coming from the clutch housing. Has anyone had a similar experience ?

Mine make some really nasty noises when I apply gas, but I think that is from the chain. Not a ticking so much as a steady on/off grinding.

I have the same ticking on my 300 xplorer, a polaris dealership told me it's supposed to do that.

Thanks for the reply. I don't think they are supposed to do that, mine did not make the noise for the first three years after I bought it. It just started last October. From reading some of the responses today of others who hear noises, it could be in the clutch assembly. I guess when the weather warms up, I will take the cover off and take a look.

Two things come to mind. The buttons in the secondary could be shot. Or the bushings in the primary could be bad.

My wifes 2000 250 explorer makes the same noise. I lube the chain and it goes away. I think that it must be something to do with the chain tensioning system on these machines. Links seem to need lube very often.

Well, I am replacing the chain on one of mine today. The newer one actually, but I drive it a lot harder than my dad does, so maybe that's why. I noticed that the noise is often the chain rubbing abainst the chain guide, an adjustment sometimes makes it go away.

Thanks for the reply, I will try to lube it more often and see if it helps.
