interesting project

so, my friend in ohio, Jason, has this 05 sportsman 500 that hes disatisfied with the power, everything else he loves. now, i ask him this, you have a 500 engine, theres plenty of mods to soup it up, this engine comes right off the preditor.

R-engines arnt enough for J, this guy is a true adrenaline junky. so, of all things, he calls up BMW (Bavarian Motor Works for you safisticated ATVers ) and buys a GS 650 motor from there DAKAR bike. he sends it to K&S Motorsports in louisville to have them tune the engine (port, polish, all the works) and is putting it in his 500.

dont ask me how hes doing it, but i thought you guys would be interested in such a wild project, if i get pictures, i'll send them to you guys.

The sportsman 500's engine comes from the scrambler, not the predator. But, yes he could easily hop it up to get more power. That is going to be one insane SP with that motor in it. You will have to hold on for dear life with that much power! It would really put the SPORT in sportsman.

Can the stock driveline handle that much power? Or will a new set of axles, and possible a new transmission, be needed?

Here's how i see the first ride with the new engine;

1. start it
2. put it in gear
3. give it alittle gas
4. HUGE CLOUD of white smoke as the belt MELTS.

Yeah, I think a new engine is going to be the first of many replacements to get that thing running great.

That BMW is a 650 Rotax. Same as in the Bombardier DS650. There are three versions. The Type 654 is 50hp. The Type 655 is 47. Both have EFI. The one in the quad is the Type 654DS. Carbed version, 49 horse. See them here: Rotax Click the category you want and then "engine models".

So it's not such a wild idea after all.

654DS It says it has a 5-speed gearbox. Does that mean it comes with its own transmission?

from my understanding of the project, before he puts it in hes going to go for a 80 horspower area from the engine, the engine was shipped, so it should be here in a week or so, hes going to see if it will mate up with the belt drive, and if it dosnt hes going to mod a manual to put in it.
