I've got a friend that had the same "mud in exhaust problem." It does happen, and has happened more than once on his 2000 xplorer.
My SP could use a little better low end from the clutching dept. BILL, Are you losing top speed on your xplorer after using the stiffer spring? Ride 'em hard Polcat

Bill,
I hope you didn't damage the engine while the muffler was clogged.

Polcat,
I was only able to acheive about 30mph at my local riding area.It is only 200acres and it's chopped up badly.I discussed the possibiity with Rick Ritter on losing top end,he does'nt seem to think so.For my type of riding, and the new gains I now have,I would'nt be concerned if I lost 5mph top end,but I dont think I lost anything.

Benelli,
The quad performs to well to have done any ample amout of engine damage.I have a three yr extended warenty if I did.===Bill

Just a quick FYI:

When talking to Glen Erlandson (EPI) we discussed testing etc. He said one of the final tests is on a paved lot. When developing the 400 kit, they had to "back it off" as it would wheelie excessively, and liability is a BIG issue!

I WILL check out Ritter's setup for mine though!

It seems that I remember when I first bought my Sport, the owners manual said something about some bolts on the silencer that you loosen to let built up carbon escape through. You were supposed to rev up the engine, and tap the silencer with a rubber hammer to loosen up the crap in it. Anyone heard or remember this?

Yah I have heard of this, It`s just like you say. I think some people will get different results though.
I do this to my fathers 300 4trax and get a lot of carbon out but he only uses it for hunting, work and plowing the driveway. No trail riding. Slow riding wih a lot of idleing. Mine on the other hand get`s hardly anything as I ride faster. Similar to cars when grandma steps on it every now and then you get that big cloud of black smoke.

Dieselpro,
Adam Dowden wrote an article on Hot Seats complete clutch kit.It showed quad times from 0-200 yards, once with stock clutching, and once with the Hot Seat clutch kit installed. The test was performed in 2wd and AWD on the same quad.

Just as I thought, the time was improved from 1/2- 3/4 of a second with the kit in 200 yards. Not much of a gain if you ask me.Though I have not clocked my quad before and after the spring installion,I can surly tell it is alot better than what you get from the Hot Seat clutch kit,and a hell of alot less expensive to.Im betting the EPI kit is no better in time than the Hot Seat kit, unless they are completely differant from Hot Seats kit.
Have a super day and good luck with your kit,
Bill
