Checking old machine
#1
I have a 96 scrambler (chain driven) i haven't rode in about 4 years. i would like to know what i should prep to ride this again. I changed the gas and fired it up fine. i need to change the tranny fluid what should i use? It was milky, and when in gear the machine wanted to go forward and stalls. Any other fluids i should change? i will hit all the grease fittings.

You probaly check the counter balancer for oil, make sure if it has oil injection that pump is working. The transmission creeping could be belt engaging on clutch if high idle or clutch might have to be checked for clearance or need to be cleaned and serviced, both primary and secondary clutches.

If it creeps when you start it you might just want to ride it for a bit since it has been sitting to get the clutches worn back in. If it still does it then the clutch needs to be shimmed. You changed the injector oil, gas, fuel filter, injector oil filter, airfilter, gearcase fluid, grease all the fittings, lube the chain and have fun! You may want to change the belt also.

You can use the Polaris gear oil. 80-90w. Depending on the riding that you do, the performance you want or how agressive you want it to shift will depend on what color primary spring you want. If you dont care about any of those things then leave it stock.

I think the counter balancer takes 10w30 motor oil approx. 3 ounces. To check spring when you hold it up both ends should be in straight line with each other, if not spring is bad. I do have a manual if you need other info, it is for xplorer 400 but some things might be the same.

The counter balancer has a dipstick located behind the pullstart and under carb, it has a slot for standard screwdriver and the top has a seraded edge for grip to grab with your fingers. It is not an easy place to get to, which is why it is easy to overlook during maintence.

After it has sat so long I would pull the belt cover and check for mice nests they like the vent tubes alot.
