Default ugh another top end?

well i just replaced my top end about 6 months ago on a 2003 250 trailblazer. the last time the quad was ridden was in november 2004 on the new top end. chain snapped and wasnt replaced uintill beginning of march. well i tried to start the quad one day in february and it ran for like 5 seconds then died. couldnt get it to run again. so about a month later i brought it to my friends house and put on new chain and sprockets. tired to start the quad for about 30mins. finnaly got it to run for about 10 seconds then it died. we tried to get it to run for about and hour. well i got it back to my house and friday of last week i took it apart. well i only got the head off, not the cylinder. but on top of the piston was black oil. you could rub it off if you took a rag to it. it was kinda caked on there a little bit, but on the head there was some liquid oil. took the carb off, cleand the jets, put it back on, put the head back on and still is not starting. what i dont understand at all is that the quad was only run for about 8-10 hours on the brand new top end. it ran very good. i have no idea what is goin on. could it be the piston rings are stuck? oram i going to have to replace the whole top end again? any input is greatly appreciated.

First thing you need to do is a compression test. If it tests good then it is something else.

there didnt seem to be freeplay. do you mean like a gap? when you pull the pullstarter it pulls much easier than when i replaced the top end. i dont know im gonna be takin it apart again tomorrow. and the compression test. can i buy a tester at say a napa store?

I think napa has tools that they loan out but you can use any standard compression tester. It is highly possible that you put the rings on wrong or cracked a ring puting them on. You could have also cracked the case when the chain broke and then you would have no compression.

ok tommorow im gonna go to napa and see what they have for compression testers. what is the normal compression for a 250? mine is also bored .20. if it is just the rings, can i just take them off and replace them?

Good compression will be a little above 120psi and no lower then 100-105. If the rings are the problem then yes you can get just the rings for it.

Sounds like it's that black carbon junk that builds up in two stroke exhausts. Is your pipe clear?
