Depending on what year ho you have Polaris had a recall on the cams because thay got a bad batch. They were doing repairs for free. The new cams are fine. You can go with an OEM but I would call Polaris and see what they can do for you.

Default 500 H.O. Cam

i had a bad cam in my 2000 sportsman 500. the exhaust lobe was worn completely flat. i have been told that it can happen when oil changes arent done at regular intervals and when the machine idles for long periods of time. i put a AAEN 500 HO update cam shaft in it and ive got to say for only giving 3 more ponies it sure does pull alot better then the stock cam. it can keep up with my 2001 sportsman 500 HO until about 45 when the HO just slowely pulls away. i havent noticed any cons yet but its only been in for 2 weeks. i havent done any jetting or clutching but those things are up next on my to do list. my motto is also why not get a little extra bump if you have to replace it anyways.

Web Camshafts and Aaen both make cams for the 500. You can expect an increase in power and a possible decrease in low end. The decrease in low end has little effect on a properly clutched PVT system. It's likely to use a little more gas than with the stock camshaft. As I understand the problem with the bad camshafts is that the lobes are going flat because they weren't properly hardened. If Polaris would warranty the cam, it would be the cheapest alternative, even if they just provide free part replacement. I'd be worried about metal filings in the oil. It would probably be a good idea to break in the cam with regular oil and then replace oil and filter with the synthetic oil after the initial break in of the new cam.

i was told last night by my dealer the reason the cams were going bad was the old ones only had 1 hole for the oil to exit or something and now they put 2, i had to get mine replaced back in January and he put the new one in for me...he said the old ones were having to be replaced all the time, so just get the new one and you should be fine
