Default Enlighten me here?

I am overly curious and wonder if anyone has felt the same. I recently had to purchase a new muffler for my car, now we are talking every clamp, every pipe, a converter, muffler and all brackets. Ok? $299 not bad.

For my ATV just the muffler~~~$275!

What am I missing here? What is the justification for the cost?

Automotive parts - millions manufactured and sold each year
ATV parts - not nearly as many manufactured and sold each year - I'd guess in the thousands of any given part

A basic law of economics/manufacturing/sales - the more you produce and sell - the cheaper you can do it for.

My best guess anyways. That combined with the fact that the manufacturers figure those buying ATV performance parts are willing to spend their excess cash on toys - so they can get away with charging more.

Supply and demand? What car was it, and what atv is it? What brands of each muffler? Remember people pay more money just for a name sometimes.

I think what you've got there is one apple, and one orange. Have you priced a high performance car exhaust system lately? and conversely, I bet you you could pick up a stock raptor pipe for cheap.

And remember the golden rule... Whoever has the Gold makes the rules!

I'm curious, what kind of car do you have? LOL, I haven't replaced an exhaust system or muffler on a car in 20 years, they've all been stainless steel..

A factory stainless exhaust for a Buick Regal late model is over $800.00. It is stainless so they never wear out unless you wreck the car. Same parts aftermarket and made cheaper could be had for $150.00 or so.

It's only partly about supply/demand and the economies of scale. Another BIG part of it is that it's recreational. Take a look at nearly any form of recreation and you'll see that the equipment used is overpriced. It's smart marketing. People who love to play are willing to pay more for their fun than for necessities and sharp business people figured that out probably thousands of years ago.

Im gonna go with door number one, its all about volume. I work at a factory where we make exhaust for toyota Camrys, Corollas, Tundras....... Any way, My line makes the Front/Center exhaust peice for Toyota Corolla and Matrix. The part is about 7 feet long, has two converters, 1 sub muffler, flanges, brackets, heat shields and 17 different welds on it. We make approximately 1000 of these in 8 hours. We sell them to toyota for about $215 dollars each. We have 8 people running on this line per shift all at an average pay of $14-$15 dollars an hour. The componenet cost of each full assembly is approxmately $170.00 Then also figure in the cost of Weld wire, electricity, water and the cost of equipment (We have almost a million dollars in equipment on that line). The only way we can make money is by selling a lot of them.

Basically, the more you make, the cheaper you sell
