Have any of you expereanced your chain breaking and busting up the casing? This is on a 2001 scambler 500.

This is a VERY VERY common problem with the gen 3 machines.
It was much more often with the Non-concentric drive models,(Pre -1998)
Most of the guys are running the Chain tensioner from HPD or HSP.
The chain tensioner requires you to do less maintanance on the chain for proper lash, that will minimize you chances of breaking the chain.

 

Mine is going in tonight for repair...what am I looking at as far as cost goes, as I mentioned it broke the transmission case.

I've had the same thing happen to me. My chain busted and craked my transmission case 3/4 the way around. I bought a new half case and repaired the other half. Althought i still have trouble with it leaking sometimes.

 

o yea... the cost of the new tranny case half was $150 plus it shreaded a needle bearing inside the tranny so i had to replace that myself
