Default 2002 Sportsman 500 speedometer problem.

When I turn the key on the speedometer goes all over the place. It does the samething when I am riding. It logs miles as if I was going 60 at idle. The 4 wheel drive only engauges at low rpm. Somtimes the 4 wheel drive kicks out at the worst times. Do you think it is the sensor or the speedometer. I hate to buy a new speedometer for $250.00 and it not be the problem.

The dealer can test it or you could swap it out with one of your friends sportsmans (same pod/years).

The hall sensor will only effect the speedo needle, no miles will register but it will count time.
Sometimes the needle will jump around, register low speeds or most likely do nothing.

I've got the same problem on my '02 500 with the speedo needle jumping all over.

Where's the hall sensor located? Easy to replace? Cheap or spendy?

thanks for any info.

Part #4010298 $42 dollars plus shipping at Cycle Parts Warehouse. Sensor Located on right front caliper. You might check if dealer is less considering shipping cost, plus E-bay probably has em,BUT buyer beware on used electrical items!! Get ONLY a new one as they all go out over a period of time. OPT

If the sensor cap is muddy and not able send a signal, then its possible,BUT this is a common item to fail. OPT
