this all makes no sense to me. I thought the police departments job was to enforce the law seems quite simple that if something was stolen a law was broken and the police should investigate. I remember a while back here in ohio there was a quad theft operation that the police shut down and put quite a few people in jail. I am dissapointed in the system if they are telling you they can't do anything about it. seems like they could at least put out a report and register the vin as stolen. all atv's in ohio are required to be titled by law so if any transaction takes place that puts the bike back in ohio it could be referenced with the vin. why does it have to be so difficult. I feel your pain and hope for a positive outcome. I think the problem you ran into with people thinking you are fishy is the fact that you wanted to know of a way to run vins instead of a single vin. Maybe a simple mistake in wording caused the uproar

There is such a thing as juridictional boundries. When your dealing with 2 counties, the county where the crime, in this case theft, took place. Is the reporting jurisdiction. Different states have different statutes for atv theft. In Ca. if your quad is not registered, then, the crime is classified as a theft. If it's registered, then it is a stolen vehicle. Now, I don't know who you talked to but, you are not satisfied with the results. I would suggest talking to the Sgt. or watch commander(where it was taken from) let him know what is going on and that you have tried to report it in 2 different counties to no avail. Now, if they tell you there is nothing they can do, ask them POLITELY, why? If you are still not satisfied, then, go up the chain of command. Also, check and see if there is a auto theft task force. If they do, I'd call them first, reason being is, if it's like our task force, they will get the report for any follow up investigation.

You said the state police dont have authority over county or city????????????????????? WTF is that????????????????? Here in "Podunk" Oklahoma, the State police have jurisdiction over EVERYONE. You might check your "authorities" again.

Now, was that reply really necessary?

Every state is different, I'm trying to give someone some information to help him out.

we dont have "state police" out here in OH, we have highway patrol. and they only have jurisdiction on state highways. so like if my ATV got stolen out of a truck on the interstate then yes, they probably could have helped me. but unfortunately it was stolen from my ex's garage. or was said to be stolen. but anywho.... we'll see what happens

Sounds like Ohio is like Ca. We also have no State Police. Ca. Highway patrol is responsible for the state highways and the roadways located in the unincorporated areas of the counties.

Still no luck Did you try the shift sgt or commander? Or checking for a Auto theft task force?

i talked to the police chief of the city where it was stolen from and he said he'd look into it. the county where i live basically told me to kiss off because it wasnt their problem because it was stolen from somewhere else
