I'm getting a '99 400 4X4 that's just been all gone through by the dealer with fresh top and bottom engine, struts and rear shocks are new. I've rode my friends 400 in the past and love it but I'd like to hear good and bad things so I can be ready. Thanks for any info.

 

They can be modded easily to be fast and is a great trail quad.
You need to get a chain tensioner if you will be doing any jumping.

Hopefully they put a Wiseco piston in at the rebuild, the stock one is questionable.
Rear breaks may need to be bled and are finicky.

You should be happy with it, The only real issue with the scrambler is that they are heavy. Other that I don't have much more to add then Jimmysportsman.

Check the Tie rod end and the steering post center bushing (If they are origninal then they need to be replaced)

Also just a side note: I don't know what year your buddies bike was but 2000 and newer models have Long travel rear suspension (2" more travel). Make a much nicer ride if you ask me.

Also let us know what you are getting it for?
My guess is between $2500 and $3000 if it is in SUPER GREAT SHAPE.
If you are going higher than that look else where.

 

Close, 2400 and here's the mods:

Complete engine rebuild, top and bottom, with new crank shaft, cases, .040 Wiseco Piston, all new seals and bearings and bushings through out.
New complete exhaust
New seat
New front suspension, including new CV joints, new Struts and strut housings, new ball joints
New front and rear brakes
New tires x 4
Complete tune up and break in on new engine
New air box with K&N filter
Rebuild of carb
New choke and throttle cables
New hubs and inner 4x4 parts in hubs
New front differential
New rear Fox Shock

I'm picking it up tomorrow and will ride Saturday. Anything else to watch out for?

 

They are a nice quad, I had a 99. And they are easy to mod, and it don't take alot to get the hp out of them.

The only real problem I know of withe the Fuji motor Polaris used on the Scrambler was the electric starter placement, it's under the motor, and not sealed good from the factory. Water and crud will get caught in there and rust it up, then suddenly, you have no starter. It's a pain to get to , but have it pulled out, greased good, and seal it up good with silicone and you should be good for a long time. Other than that, the motor is very peppy, and a lot of fun to ride, just don't get a lot of protection from those little fenders !!

 

I just got mine, what a quad. This is definately the fastest 4X4 I've ever seen. The power is amazing and the suspension is great. I can't believe I've never owned a polaris before, I've been missing out! Even as heavy as the Scrambler is, it gets up and goes flat out fast. Thanks for all the heads up on things to watch out for. I'm new to the PVT thing, is the clutch a difficult thing to work on? How do you check the belt?

 

it's not hard just a little complicated until you get used to it. Just do some forum searches for belt replacement and you'll find some good info

 

The clutching aint bad to work on, they are very tunable. Make sure you follow directions and preload the secondary spring if you take it apart. The snap-ring can be a bitch and it would be easier with two people to get it back together.

To check the belt just remove the cover and measure the width, i think it should be 1 3/16 wide at the top, it should say right on the belt.
My scr400 OEM belt was 1/16 under the "new" size when it was replaced but worked fine, I will use it for a spare now.
