Default Dirty Carb

I drowned my quad a week ago. In order to start it I had to drain the carb. The water was very dirty. On the way home it was backfiring on deceleration but plenty of power from bottom to top. I went for a ride today and the quad seemed to run well until the way home. It started to loose power and sputter and backfire on the top end but still ran well on the bottom. When I got home I did some searches on backfire and seen a few things to try. 1-throttle cable adjustment, 2-cracks in the muffler. I wanted to clean my air filter first to rule that out. While was letting the cleaning agent do its thing on the filter I thought I would fire it up and see what it ran like without the filter. When I started to acclerate it ran ok but when it started to get around 30 it ran like crap. I put my hand over the intake and of course it bogged out but I found that if I throttled the intake with my hand and had it at WOT it would scream pretty well. After I did this I figured that it wasn't getting enough gas in the mixture. So I pulled my carb off and cleaned it tonight. Found lots of dirt in it from when i drowned it.

Do you guys think I am on the right track and does anyone have any tips for cleaning my carb. I would like to be confident that it is clean to avoid having to pull it out again. Thanks in advance
