Is there any additives I can put in the gas or oil of my Xplorer 400 to reduce the smoke. I already use Polaris Synthetic oil and she smokes a lot less than a buddies Scrambler who runs regular 2-stroke oil.

My wife generally sits on back and finds that at slower speeds the smell can be overpowering. (No . . . not getting rid of the wife!) I was also looking at getting a muffler shop to bend a piece of pipe extending the exaust outlet to behind the rear rack.

Any thoughts.

Did you try Polaris VES oil? [Variable Exaust System].
It is 100% synthetic and works great to reduce the smoke.Ask for a gallon of #2872925,and good luck,

Maybe your oil injector cable needs adjusted? Just a thought, I'm no mechanic.

 

I owned a 1996 Sportsman 400, one of the best damn bikes I have ever owned, and no matter what you do the smell will always be there. I have tried a lot of the 2-stroke oils and have found only the Polaris brand to help out the most. I had passengers complain about the smell of it to, so I solved the smell problem real quick..............speed up to about 55 or 60. How fast does yours go???? Mine went about 63.

Try running Klotz techniplate it smells real good nothing like the polaris oil that is what i am switching too if i can ever use up my 2gallons of gold oil.

If the oil pump has never been adjusted, then it needs it. The oil pump doesn't get out of adjustment over time, however, it is set from the factory to put out extra oil. This is good during break-in, however, isn't good afterwards. The oil injection pump is on the front left of the motor(if you're sitting on the bike). You have to remove 3 screws that allow removal of the cover plate. You then use the cable adjustment on top of the injector to align 2 marks. If you're looking at the injector from the front, one mark is made into part of the housing, and the other mark is on the cable wheel. The one in the housing is approximately at the 8 o'clock position, according to the center of the cable wheel. You adjust the cable until the mark on the cable wheel aligns with the mark in the housing. Look in your owner's manual for a little better idea of what you're looking for. I'm not the best at explaining, but the procedure is not hard. Good luck.
